This conference will assist participants to recognize their understanding of gangs and the potential issues they bring to schools and communities. NYGIA provides a venue for collaboration and communication across disciplines.

Target audience: community-based organizations, law enforcement/corrections, schools, medical and mental health professionals, civic groups, youth agencies, and faith-based organizations.

Gangs 101:
 This presentation will provide a broad introduction regarding gang structures, the foundational factors of gang initiation, membership, colors and tattooing.

Why People Join Gangs: A look into the theories on why people join gangs. All the major theories will be explored. Thomas F. Umina, Ph.D. is a New York State licensed psychologist. He works for the Office of Mental Health as the Deputy Director/Director of Inpatient Operations for Central New York Psychiatric Center (CNYPC). CNYPC is a maximum security forensic hospital located in Marcy, NY which includes a 200 bed Sex Offender Treatment Program and a 150 bed Forensic Inpatient Psychiatric program. His clinical experience includes working in a variety of settings, including Delaware’s Maximum Security Forensic facility and New Jersey’s largest inpatient psychiatric hospital. He joined the Office of Mental Health in 2006 as an Associate Psychologist at Bedford Hills Correctional Facility and was subsequently promoted to Forensic Unit Chief at Downstate Correctional Facility in 2009. Dr. Umina served as the Director of Corrections-Based Operations from January 2011 until October 2011. He holds a Master’s and a Doctorate in Counseling Psychology from Temple University.
